How it works
HEX stores the red, green and blue channels as two-digit hexadecimal numbers: #4f46e5 means R=0x4f, G=0x46, B=0xe5. RGB is the same three numbers in decimal; HSL describes the same color as hue (0-360° position on the color wheel), saturation and lightness (both 0-100%), which is far easier for humans to tweak. All three describe identical colors, so conversion is lossless math, done locally as you type.
FAQ
When should I use HSL instead of HEX?
When you’re designing. Want a darker variant of your brand color? Keep the hue, lower the lightness. A softer background? Drop the saturation. In HEX or RGB those edits mean recalculating three unrelated numbers.
What is the 3-digit HEX shorthand?
A compact form where each digit is doubled: #a3c equals #aa33cc. The converter accepts both and always outputs the full 6-digit form.
